I thought the house on Twelfth Street was enormous— with large rooms and cavernous halls and almost alarming echoes… There was the long flight up to the third floor, rather dark at night. I remember Jack being made to go up it alone as a very little boy. As he disappeared in the darkness he was heard to say, “You can’t hurt me. I have a wonderful power!”
That house was our home as little children. In fact, it was the only home we ever knew together.
