Janet Gaynor (October 6, 1906 - September 14, 1984)

In 1928, Janet Gaynor was the first woman to receive the Academy Award for best actress. She was awarded the Oscar based on her body of work in the three films shown above: 7th Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), and Street Angel (1928). She had a successful film career throughout the 1930s, famously appearing in A Star is Born in 1937. Toward the end of the 1930s, she retired from the screen upon her marriage to Hollywood designer Gilbert Adrian, and spent her later years painting and traveling. She died due to complications from a car accident in 1984.

Happy birthday, Janet Gaynor.
